Embracing life and living to the fullest are admirable traits that we should all try to embody, no matter how old we are. For some people, this can mean living without regrets, while for others it can be a call to seize every opportunity.
For one incredibly brave woman, this meant going skydiving on her 100th birthday. In this edition of our Aspirational Senior of the Month series, we're celebrating the wonderful Georgina Harwood.
Georgina Harwood first made headlines back in 2015 when she participated in an exhilarating skydive to celebrate turning the ripe old age of 100.
Based in Cape Town, South Africa, Ms Harwood flew high up in the sky above the city before leaping out of a plane – with a skydiving instructor, of course – to reach speeds of up to 200 kilometres per hour on her descent. She was cheered on by family and friends, who toasted her successful landing with a glass of bubbly.
"It was wonderful, exhilarating, and special," she said, as reported in the Telegraph. "I'm trying to think of the adjectives I can add to it."
It wasn't the great-grandmother's first airborne daredevil adventure, however. Ms Harwood's first parachuting escapade took place in 2007 when she was 92, making this her third jump in less than decade.
"I was much more conscious of everything this time because I had a better idea what I was going to do," she said.
According to the Telegraph, Ms Harwood had been planning her big jump for a while, despite being uncertain whether it would even happen.
"Quite frankly I didn't expect to turn 100 and able to enjoy it but I am," she added.
Don't let age hold you back
Ms Harwood might need to walk with a cane in her everyday life, but there was nothing stopping her from living out her dreams. Her motto?
"Do it now! Whether it's comfortable or uncomfortable, good or bad, relaxing or challenging – don't delay."
She certainly embodied this motto, heading up Cape Town's Table Mountain with her family to continue her centennial celebrations.
"I'm so delighted that at the age of 100 I'm still a reasonably active sort of person that I can enjoy my beautiful cake; and I can get myself up the mountain. I do like my walking stick but otherwise I can walk up the stairs."
But that's not all…
If you think skydiving at age 100 was impressive enough, two days after this incredible feat Ms Harwood jumped into a cage to go swimming with sharks. In the waters off the coast of Gaansbai, Ms Harwood encountered great white sharks to fundraise for new life jackets for the South African National Sea Rescue Institute.
"I'm so glad I did it, a special experience in my life time, I just can't compare it to anything else," she told the Telegraph.
