Using Your Home Care Package for Physiotherapy

At Bannister In Home Care, we believe in supporting every aspect of your wellbeing—physical, emotional, and mental. Physiotherapy plays a key role in helping older Australians stay mobile, independent, and pain-free. That’s why it’s important to know that your Home Care Package (HCP) funding can be used to access physiotherapy services tailored to your individual needs.

When Can You Use Your Package for Physiotherapy?

If physiotherapy is part of your care goals and helps you to continue living safely and independently at home, it is an approved service under the Home Care Package program. You can use your HCP funding for physiotherapy when:

  • You’ve experienced a fall, or are at risk of falling

  • You’re recovering from surgery, injury or hospitalisation

  • You’re dealing with age-related joint pain, stiffness or mobility issues

  • You need help with walking aids, strength and balance exercises

  • You’ve received a recommendation from your GP or Allied Health professional

In short, if physiotherapy supports your independence, mobility or ability to live safely at home—it should be a valid and valuable use of your package.

Why Physiotherapy Matters for Older Australians

Physiotherapy is more than just rehabilitation—it’s about prevention, strength-building, and improving your overall quality of life. For older adults, regular physio sessions can make a huge difference in:

  • Maintaining balance and coordination – which helps reduce the risk of falls

  • Improving strength and flexibility – keeping you active and able to do everyday tasks

  • Managing chronic conditions – such as arthritis, osteoporosis or post-stroke symptoms

  • Rebuilding after illness or injury – helping you recover faster and more safely

  • Preventing hospitalisation – by identifying and managing mobility concerns early

It’s a proactive way to stay strong, steady and confident in your own home.

How to Access Physiotherapy Through Your Package

At Bannister In Home Care, we make it easy to arrange physiotherapy as part of your support plan. Here's how it works:

  • Speak to your Care Coordinator
Let your dedicated coordinator know you’re interested in physiotherapy. If you’ve already had physio in the past, bring along any recommendations or notes from your GP or specialist.

  • Include it in your Care Plan
We’ll assess your goals and health needs, and if physiotherapy supports your independence, we’ll include it as an approved service in your Home Care Agreement.

  • Choose your provider
We can recommend trusted physiotherapists, or you’re welcome to suggest your own. Physiotherapy can be delivered in your home or at a clinic—whatever works best for you.

  • We manage the funding and bookings
Once your service is approved, we take care of the invoicing and administration, ensuring your package funds are used appropriately and efficiently.

  • Ongoing support and reviews
We check in regularly to make sure the physiotherapy is meeting your needs and delivering the right outcomes.

Can I See Any Physiotherapist?

You can see any physiotherapist that meets the Department of Health’s guidelines and is able to provide appropriate services under your care plan. However, it’s best to choose one who has experience working with older adults, and ideally one who can offer in-home services or mobile visits if travel is difficult for you.
